    1. Realistic Fiction Terms to know

    3. Character Traits Character traits are found through a characters words, thoughts, and actions. Example: Rachel stood awkwardly, she didn’t talk, she thought about the kids outside, and she sighed as she continued to work. Traits that we can use to describe Rachel is lonely and responsible.

    4. Theme The underlying meaning or message in the story. In Granny’s Chair the theme is doing things that you are needed to do. Growing up is also a theme in the story. There could be more than one theme in a story.

    5. Setting Time and Place where the story takes place. In Granny’s Chair the setting is on the screened-in porch in the early evening, probably in the country.

    6. Plot The main story arc of a literary work (story) The sequence of events as they occur in the story

    7. Parts of the Plot Exposition - setting, conflict and characters Rising action-builds suspense Climax-turning point Falling action- end of crisis Resolution- reasonable end

    8. Context Clues When you use the rest of a sentence to figure out the meaning of a word you don’t know.

    10. Idioms An idiom is a combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words themselves She was dying to know what Santa was bringing her for Christmas. Meaning of dying in this sentence is impatient, or can’t wait.

    11. Denouement The denouement is the very end of the story.
