  2. Mission Statement “to represent, at national level, local and community voluntary sport through consulting with and catering for its member Sports Councils and other affiliated agencies”

Membership • Full Members • Local Sports Councils (57) • Associate Members • Local Authorities (10) • General (6) • Through its membership • Some 7500 sports clubs and sports based organisations participate in the work of SALSC, involving many thousands of active sportsmen and women of all ages as well as volunteer coaches, administrators and supporters.

  4. Primary Objectives • To act as a Forum to enable local sports councils and associate organisations to meet and discuss matters of a common interest in seeking to promote interest and participation in sport and physical recreation in Scotland. • To develop and support such programmes, initiatives and competitions and such other events both social and active as may be appropriate to promote interest and participation in sport at local and community level.

  5. Primary Objectives • To co-ordinate the work of local sports councils both generally and in relation to specific projects and to develop new sports councils where none exist. • To liaise with the Scottish Executive, sportscotland, local authorities and other agencies in the development of sport in Scotland.

Areas of Work • Local • Over the last 30 years SALSC has worked closely with its members and partners to promote sport at local level through the establishment of and the development of our local sports councils. • Local sports councils form an important link between local authorities and the voluntary sports sector and work closely in partnership in developing and supporting sports development initiatives.

Areas of Work • Local • Local Sports Councils have also taken on important roles from the local authority such as management of local sports grants schemes, links with sports clubs, organisation of sports awards schemes, consultation on project and facility development, sporting twinning links, and promotion of activities. • The successes of the individual sports councils have been welcomed by each and every one of our partner agencies.

Areas of Work • National • SALSC and its membership participate in the promotion and development of a wide range of activities and strategies developed and promoted by our various partner agencies both on their own initiative and in co-operation with our partner agencies. • In addition SALSC, in co-operation with sportscotland, organises their annual National Seminar and Sports Exhibition, an event which is relative to all agencies involved in the development of sport here in Scotland.

Areas of Work • National • Other examples… Sport 21 and kindred national strategies, Child Protection, Soccer 7s, Walk about a Bit 90’s, sportsmatch, National Lottery sport and associated lottery projects, National Sports Quiz and National Schools Sports Quiz, national Sports Events Programme and various Health Promotions.

Areas of Work • International • In recent years SALSC and its membership have been working in the international field of sport, particularly through its partnership with the International Sport & Culture Association. • This world wide agency brings together organisations working in the field of the development of interest and participation in sport at community and non-competitive level and in the development of educational development of young people working in this area.
