FACILITIES EXTENSION PROJECT 2009 OLYMPIA GYMNASTIC SPORTS – WIGRAM - CHRISTCHURCH
EXTENSION – WHY? • Our recreational and competitive gymnasts, along with coaches, have been constrained for space for over 3 years – we are very popular • No room for additional school groups that want to book • No room for additional rhythmic, trampoline or artistic recreation classes – waiting lists for all three of these areas • Overcrowded cramped venue and conditions for competitions – safety is being compromised • Facilities for other community groups • Only major sports facility on the western side of the city
WHY SHOULD YOU FUND US? • We provide quality affordable professional gymnastic classes for pre-schools, schools and the general community • We are helping both children and adults to be more active and stay active • We are good employers • We have proven to be the top club in New Zealand and the most likely club to produce successful international gymnasts • SPARC philosophy of general movements is incorporated in our programmes
WHY GYMNASTICS? • Gymnastics is a life skill • Physical activity patterns are set in childhood • Gymnastics movement patterns are the basis of all sport • Gymnastics provides whole body movement patterns including swing, rotation, statics, spring, locomotion and landings • Olympia strives to deliver quality gymnastics and related gymsports to as many people as possible. On average over 1500 individuals use our facilities per week.
COMMUNITY USE • Olympia has strong links with approximately 150 schools in Canterbury • From the local community, Olympia averages 6000 visits each year by mostly children (who are not members of the club) • Host the South Island Masters Games for gymnastics, Primary and Secondary School rhythmic, artistic and trampoline competitions annually • Host of area school competitions (eg Leeston, Lincoln)
WHY THIS FLOOR PLAN • To support the activities of the wider community more effectively • Better usable gymnastic floor space for all codes • Expansion is in keeping with the original building’s aesthetics and will therefore provide little intrusion by not changing the building’s look • Minimal disruption to the gymnasium classes and programme during construction • Does not intrude on neighbouring properties nor encroach on the main Green Space • Allows for meeting/conferencing rooms
EXTENSION’S MISSION • Support activities of the wider community • Make gymnastics available to all • Provide affordable quality programmes • Allow members to reach their potential • To contribute to a healthier happier society • Provide a safe and happy environment for all users • Help Canterbury children be active and stay active • Provide a venue for competitions • Provide a venue for other community activities.
