Securing a Student Teaching Placement is Difficult Because… Teachers are evaluated on Performance & Merit • They are hesitant to commit to an unknown student teacher because they may prove to be problematic. Schools are under mandates to show improvements in student learning • Student teachers take time away from work the school is involved in. • Schools limit the number of student teachers they will accept. • Principals have very high expectations for student teachers and low tolerance for underperforming student teachers
However…They haven't met You! Teachers and Principals want to see that you are: • Dependable – you can be counted on • Diligent – act and get things done well • Proactive – act well in advance of due dates • Professional – work is free of errors, you dress, talk, look, act like a teacher. • Knowledgeable – you know your content areas • Skilled & Experienced– you prove your ability to engage with students and demonstrate how to apply diverse instructional practices and assessment strategies, and classroom management. • Student & Result Oriented – teaching is about students’ learning. - Guest Teacher – you know your place…as a guest and learner.

Things That Can and Do Go Wrong • Lack of preparedness & experience • Lack of realistic self-perception • Want to be “liked”; Don’t want to be perceived as “mean” • Introverted/Lack teacher presence & voice • Outside expectations and interference • Family expectations and demands • Significant other’s interference - engagement
