Thyroxine (T4) By: Jennifer Hahn
Production... • Produced in the Thyroid Gland • The target cells are all cells of the body • It is produced naturally to regulate metabolism • During growth spurts more T4 is produced • As a person gets older less T4 is produced
C15H11I4NO4 Tyrosine derivative
Reaching the Target Cell • Binds to plasma protein • Binds to nucleus • Hormone receptor allows T4 to bind to DNA (to turn on or turn off the gene)
The Facts About Thyroxine • The normal levels of T4 are 4.5-11.2 mcg/dL (micrograms per deciliter) • Hyperthyroidism- overactive thyroid • Hypothyroidism- underactive thyroid • This hormone regulates growth and metabolism for the body • If not enough thyroxine is produced a pure, synthetic form of thyroxine is used as a substitute
Overproduction of Thyroxine • Graves disease- too much T4 speeds up metablosim and stimulate the thyroid uncontrollably. Can lead to liver damage and heart damage if it goes untreated. • Symptoms • Rapid pulse • Tremor (shaking) of the hands • Sweating and • sensitivity to heat • Fatigue • Bulging eyes • Weight loss (despite an increased appetite) • Nervousness, agitation and anxiety • Treatment-Radioactive iodine therapy • Shrinks thyroid gland allowing for less thyroxine to be produced
Underproduction of Thyroxine • Cretinism- The thyroid will produce such little amounts of thyroxine that the thyroid can not function properly. The person’s metabolism and development will be stunted resulting in dwarfism. • Myxedema coma- loss of brain function due to severely low levels of Thyroxine • Symptoms that lead up to myxedema coma: • fatigue • lethargy • mental impairment • depression • cold intolerance • hoarseness • dry skin • weight gain • change in menstrual cycles • constipation • Headaches • Treatment (Cretinism and Myxedema Coma) - Thyroxine is given to patient
