Extended Sentences • Use all your notes as a reference to write more complex sentences • Practice experimenting with different sentence structures
Examples 1) The boy and the dog look at the lake. The water is beautiful and the day is nice. The day is a Friday, and the boy does not have much to do. The dog is happy and is thinking about swimming. They both want to swim, but they also think about how they do not have a towel. 2) They sell a lot of food in the market. All the people who sell food wake up really early. They set up on the street and make sure that their food does not touch the ground. Many people walk by the food but a lot of the time, the farmers who sell food have a lot of leftover food. 3) They are building a house made up of wood. There are a lot of people working together to create the house. The day is sunny and a good time for work. They want to finish the building soon so that the town can have a new place to meet. 4) The woman just came out of surgery. She had problems with her heart, but now she is fine. She used to be tired, but now she has a lot of energy. Her doctor did a good job, and she is happy that she is well again and can go back to playing with her children.
Examples 5) The judge is thinking about the case. He wants to support the defendant because the judge believes the defendant is telling the truth. All the facts heard in court, however, seem to support that the defendant had robbed a market. 6) The children left their stuff in the classroom. They ran outside to play in the sun with the teacher. The students have been working hard, and the teacher wanted to give them a rest. The classroom is empty and quiet. 7) The man is building his own chair. He thinks that the chairs in the market are too expensive. He makes all of his own furniture. When his bed needs a new frame, he builds one, and when his shelf gets week, he builds an even stronger shelf. 8) The bear is cleaning himself in the river. He got dirty from running around everywhere. Inside the water, he can also catch some fish if he is hungry. He likes to play in the water, and when he does not want his fur to be wet, he shakes himself and sprays the water everywhere.

Examples • Boise is a quiet city and has nice people. There are a lot of trees and many parks for the citizens to walk through. The weather is interesting. It is really cold during the winter and pretty hot during the summer. • I enjoy reading a good book. When the weather is bad and I cannot go outside, I always like to sit near the fireplace and pull out a book I checked out from the library. I always have a cup of water beside me so that I do not have to get up from the fireplace for several hours. • I like math a lot. When I learn a new equation, I always like to use it many times with as many different numbers as possible. When I learn math, I am never bored, and even though it gets hard, I never feel tired of it. • I wake up early every day and eat a really good breakfast. I live in a large house and own a pool, a tennis court, and a large theater to watch movies with my family. Each day is really busy, and I work really hard to make my movies as interesting as possible.
Examples • I like to eat bananas. There is a market near my house, and every morning, I walk past to purchase several bananas for the whole day. When I am tired, a banana always wakes me up, and when I am hungry, a banana always fills me up. • I enjoy talking politics with my friends. Although there are many things we do not agree on and we can get really angry, at the end we all know that we still like each other. When we talk about politics, we get really excited and it can be really fun. • I want to be a medical doctor and am taking several science courses right now. I enjoy talking to people and would like to be a doctor to help people. There are many things I can do as a doctor, and I think I can study hard. • I like walking through the parks in my city. The parks are always beautiful and the city does a great job cleaning the parks and making the parks as comfortable as possible. When the weather is nice, I cannot stay away from the parks.
Descriptions • Describe a dog. • Describe a doctor. • Describe a table. • Describe a book. • Describe bad weather. • Describe a bed. • Describe a car. • Describe a kitchen.
Examples • A dog is very happy and always has a lot of energy. When the weather is nice, the dog runs through the grass very fast and likes to play in the water. A dog has a lot of fur and runs really fast. • A doctor studies a lot and he works a lot. Doctors never stop studying because every patient has new problems that he needs to understand. They wear white coats and sleep very little. They work night and day. • A table is where a family sits down to eat dinner, and it is where people sit to study for their classes. A table can be where people put their phone and where they put a glass of water. A table can hold many things. • People read books, and a book can teach many things to its readers. There are many books in the city library and in the school library. A book takes a lot of time to get through, but while a person reads, times seems to fly by.
Examples • Bad weather is in which there is raining ice, bad winds, and really low temperatures. When there is bad weather, many people just stay inside. People who have to go outside during bad weather are not happy. • A bed is where a person rests during the night or takes a nap during the day. A person can read on a bed or watch TV. There are soft and hard beds, and many people like different types. Beds are expensive. • A car is what a person uses to drive long distances. A car makes traveling very convenient. A car can be expensive, but people can pay a small amount of money over a long period of time. People have to make sure their cars do not have problems. • A kitchen can be big or small. A lot of people like large kitchens so they can move around more easily, but other people like small kitchens so that they can reach things more easily. A kitchen has to be clean and is where delicious food is made.
Instructions • How do you get to a market? • How do you make fried rice? • How do you get a good grade? • How do you go to sleep? • How do you get along with people? • How do you get good meat? • How can you learn a new language? • How do you drive safely?
Examples • You have to drive down this main road for several miles, take a right, and then continue for a few minutes. The market is on your right. • You have to cut all of you vegetables into small pieces and cut up all your meat. You have to cook the rice first in a different container. You cook the meat first, then add in the vegetables, and then finally add in the rice. • You have to study every day and make sure that you do well on the tests. You have to pay attention during class and work hard to really understand the topics. • When you cannot go to sleep, you can start thinking relaxing thoughts or start counting. The quiet activities will help your mind relax.
Examples • You have to talk to people and really become comfortable with the conversations. When you see people, you have to try to talk to them. • You have to go to a fresh market and ask the butcher for the freshest cuts. You have to really understand where you can get good meat and talk to as many places as possible. • You have to live a long time in the country that speaks the language you want to learn. That way, you have to read, write, speak, and listen to that language all the time. • You have to drive while looking everywhere as you keep your eyes to the front. You have to think about what could happen. When you drive, you have to not be tired.
Prepositional Phrases Examples Go around the statue. Walk between the towers. Go under the bridge. Travel through the park. Climb over the fence. Walk past the restaurant. Turn at the bank. Drive toward the north end of town. Run after the dog.
Activities for Improving Writing • Example • Keep a journal and write down your daily feelings and thoughts • write as much as you can on one day and come back to it again after some time has passed in order to write the thoughts more specifically with the new words learned
Write Down Your Thoughts • How do you feel about education? • How do you feel about business? • How do you feel about tests? • How do you feel about nature? • How do you feel about cars.
Examples • I really love education because you can learn what can help you toward your goals. • I am angry when businessmen are not careful. Business is good for a country, but when people are not careful, the country can have many problems. • I hate tests. My stomach always hurts when there are tests. I get so nervous, and I would be happier if I did not have to take tests. • I love nature. People should not keep building and removing what nature we have left. • I like cars because they allow for people to travel to all the places they need to go to.
Teaching Children to Write More Complex Sentences • Teach children that they can add more descriptive adjectives before nouns • Teach children that they can combine sentences using conjunctions to create interesting sentences • Teach children that it is important children practice using as many different words as possible
Lessons • Come up with three lesson plans for encouraging children to write more complex sentences.
Example Lesson for Teaching Children • Give the children five topics to write about. Each child will write one sentence for each topic to start off. • A week later, ask the children to add a little writing to each of their sentences using what new words they learned. • Wait one more week and ask the children to add a little more writing to each of their sentences using what new words they learned. • Ask the children to draw a picture for each topic to finish off the activity.
Lessons • Come up with three lesson plans for teaching children to describe and instruct using English.
Example Lesson for Teaching Children • Have the children draw a huge map of the city together and decorate the map • Draw two points on the map and ask the children to write down instructions for getting from one point to the other • Ask the children to describe the two places (e.g. one point is the park and the other point is the market) • Have the children write down their descriptions for the two places on the huge map right next to the two drawn points • Repeat steps as many times as possible
Another Possible Lesson • Set up an obstacle course in the classroom and make sure that you make the obstacles interesting • Ask the children to line up and give different instructions to each child • Instruct the children through the obstacle course using phrases such as “go under the cardboard table,” “go around the green chair,” and “climb over the blue table.” • Change up the instructions so each child has practice listening and getting used to English

Example Lesson for Children to Write Down Daily Thoughts • Have the children practice writing English by having them write down a one sentence description of what their day was like • By taking the time each day to write down one sentence, each child will understand English better. • After having the children write down their thoughts, have the children talk to each other regarding their day to practice their speaking and listening skills
