What is the OSSLT? • It is a test of reading and writing skills. • It is based on the curriculum up to the end of Grade NINE.

What is the OSSLT? • The Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is a GRADUATION requirement for all students. (It’s a “High-stakes” Test)
the OSSLC (Course) • Students who are NOT successful on the OSSLT will take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy COURSE (OSSLC) in Grade 11!
What is the OSSLT? • Two Sessions • One Question Booklet per session • One Answer Booklet per session • No answers written in the question booklet • One goal: SUCCESS!

Booklet 1 • Reading Selections – Multiple Choice and Open Response Questions (narrative) • Short Writing Tasks (with the reading selection) • The News Report • Open Response Question (something current) Booklet 2 • Long Writing Task (a.k.a. the Essay) • Multiple Choice (conventions – grammar, paragraphs, sentence structure, punctuation) • 2 more Reading Selections – Multiple Choice Questions • Short Writing Task – your own experience • Graphic Reading Selection – Multiple Choice Questions
How Do We Prepare For The OSSLT? • Grade 9 Practice Test (The OSSLT looks the same with new questions) • Practice questions from the Lit-Blitz in Class (March 18 to 21) • AFTER SCHOOL Literacy Help • Two RF Hall booklets(online) • D2L Quiz Bank • The practice questions on the EQAO Web site
What’s New?The 2019 OSSLT • Every student can take up to 150 minutes for each booklet. • Students should ask about Text-Help/Read & Write for the OSSLT!

Graphic Text – What is it? • A Graphic Text presents ideas and information with graphic features (diagrams, photographs, drawings, sketches, patterns, timetables, maps, charts, or tables). • For the Graphic Reading Text you will be required to answer 6 multiple choice questions. Let’s Practice!

Open Response • Demonstrate your writing skills by using your knowledge and personal experience. • There is no reading selection connected to these tasks. You must write your response based on your own experiences, background knowledge and connections in relation to the question. (6 Lines of Writing)
