  1. Fundamentals of Web PublishingWeek 5b FrontPage 2000 Or Just Another Corporate Tool? Andy Stokes

  2. What is FP 2000? • Microsoft’s entry into the world of WYSIWYG web page creation and site maintenance tools • First appearance was in late 1996/early 1997 in beta form

  3. Why FP 2000? • Easy to use • Integrates well with Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME (not CEmeNT) as well as MS Office • Inexpensive ($69 for academic version, $150 for full, professional version) • Bundled with other tools – Image Composer and GIF Animator

  4. Why NOT FP 2000? • Still some quirks related to the way MS wants to work the web • Not all features work in all browsers – Javascript items often work differently in IE than in Netscape, VBScript can be problematic, too • Pages may contain elements that may not function unless published • Requires server extensions to be installed on server for some elements to function properly

  5. DISCLAIMER • WARNING: The following presentation is valid only for FrontPage 2000 and does not specifically use or incorporate features of previous versions of Microsoft’s FrontPage product. • This is also not an endorsement by the instructor. He prefers to use NetObjects Fusion but can and will use FrontPage in a pinch. • Frustration or feelings of angst caused by using this or any other Microsoft product are not the fault of the instructor. The school has provided access to the product, I am merely providing a little instruction on the use of the product. That means you get the very basics. If you want to explore further, do it on your own time. I do not mean to discourage you but we only have so much time…

  6. Right, let’s go adventuring…

  7. Start Here On your machine in the lab or, if you are so fortunate, at home (work, etc.), click on Start, Program Files and select Microsoft FrontPage or find an icon that looks like this (it may be on the desktop)

  8. You try it – Lab 4 • Find a way to get your index.html page into FP2k – HINT: You will have to create a new web • Add some graphics, scripts, hover buttons, whatever other elements you want to your page. • Publish your page to Socrates using the Publish Web command in FrontPage. If that does not work, publish locally (to a directory on your C: drive) and then ftp the contents of that directory to a Lab4 subdirectory on Socrates – Hint: You will have to create a Lab4 subdirectory • Put a link to the Lab4 on your index.html page, just like you do for the Projects!

  9. Additional Learning Resource • Nice interactive tutorial can be found at:http://www.actden.com/fp2000/java/index.htm • http://www.outfront.net/ • http://www.webworkshop.org/ • http://www.auscomp.com/FPThemes.html
