Some Guiding Thoughts • The Church is not a corporation. • The Church is a body of God’s people. • The Church already has leaders: God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. • The Church needs human leaders to more effectively accomplish God’s will for the Church. • The Church needs Leaders, not Managers.

  34. Dangers of the “Pastor System” • “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” • Pride is the usual result of excessive power.

  35. Dangers of the “Pastor System” 2. The congregation is often identified with the “pastor.” • Instead of “The Lord’s church” it may be called “Patel’s church” or “Smith’s church.”

  36. Dangers of the “Pastor System” 3. The congregation stands or falls on the wisdom and strength of one man. • The collective wisdom and experience of other church members is neglected.

  37. Dangers of the “Pastor System” 4. If the pastor’s zeal decreases, the entire congregation slows down. • Worship under the pastor system tends to become passive.

  39. Dangers of the “Pastor System” Autocratic or Dictatorial Style The Pastor: • Controls all decision-making. • Does not ask or accept opinions of others. • Forbids others to question decisions or authority. • Promotes a passive following. • Stifles creativity and new ideas.

Dangers of the “Pastor System” Autocratic or Dictatorial Style • Seldom lets others make decisions. • Feels most qualified and experienced. • Lacks confidence in abilities of others. • Critical of differing opinions. • Rarely gives recognition. • Often fails to recognize the skills and abilities within other people.   44. Benefits of A Participative Ministry • It is a mutual ministry. -Christians teach and lead each other. • It builds up the body of Christ. -Christians edify each other. •  It reaches out to the world with the Gospel. -Christians lead the unconverted to Christ. (Eph. 4:11-13; Matt. 28:18-20)

  45. Participative Style The Participative Leader: • Considers ideas of all team members. • Serves as team facilitator. • Leads as a coach/player. • Frequently accepts team’s ideas over his/her own. • Focuses on stimulating creativity. • Creates a culture of innovation.
