Presentation Outline • Introduction and Design Considerations • Aerosols • HEPA Filters • Filtration Mechanisms • Proposed Design • Alternatives
Introduction and Design Considerations • Air filter is initial step in insulin process, sterilizing fermentor feed • SuperPRO output: • Fermentation as batch process • Feed composition of ammonia, nitrogen, and oxygen • Unspecified particulate matter • 1166 m3/hr average flowrate • Sterilized air required for fermentor to ensure no batch contamination
Aerosols • Solid and liquid contaminants suspended in gas streams • Typical size: 0.001 µm to 100 µm • Particulates follow lognormal distribution • Examples: Soil, bacteria, pollen… Soil Particles (magnified) E. coli bacteria Pollen Particles (magnified)
Vacuum cleaner HEPA filter HEPA Filters • High Efficiency Particulate Filter • Removes at least 99.97% of air borne particles > 0.3 µm • Requires prefilter system to capture larger particles • Initially developed in 1940’s for a top-secret method of eliminating radioactive particulate • Currently used in: electronic, medical, pharmaceutical, and nuclear fields
Proposed Design • Recommended filters from Cambridge Filter Corp • Prefilter • Aero-Answer Mate - $75.00 • 60-65% efficiency • 1580 m3/h • HEPA Filter • Absolute Filter - $160.00 • 99.97% efficiency • 1680 m3/h • Considerations • Moisture susceptibility • Replacement cost and frequency
Ozone molecule Alternatives • Air filtration alternatives • Ozone (O3) injection • UV Radiation • Gas Scrubbing • Heat • Serves to kill biological particles but not necessarily remove all physical or chemical particles • Less economical
