Purpose of the LMI Improvement Grant Determine the work force implications of green jobs and industry How: Collect, analyze, and disseminate labor market information about careers in the green economy.
Why do the research? The BLS system of NAICS and SOC codes are not designed to adequately capture the green economy. • Difficult to distinguish from a job title whether the job is green or not • Green jobs are not limited to certain NAICS
What is a Green Job? Wind Turbine Technician Solar Installer ? Civil Engineer ? Electrician ? Mechanic ? Truck Driver
Where do we find Green Jobs? Utilities? Construction? Agriculture? Manufacturing?

Literature Review Hundreds of reports on green jobs or the green economy. • O*NET • Pew • The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) Other states have already done a green jobs survey and have identified green industries and occupations in their economy. • Washington • Michigan • Oregon • California
Other States’ Green Jobs • California - 3.7% of work force is green • Washington - 1.6% of work force is green • Oregon - 3.0% of work force is green • Michigan - 3.0% of work force is green
Developing a definition • We reviewed other states’ definitions and one developed by the Workforce Information Council • We adapted WIC’s definition and ensured it included all of the targeted industries and occupations listed in the grant
Green Job Definition A green job is one in which the work is essential to products or services in any of these core green areas: • Renewable Energy and Alternative Fuels • Energy Efficiency and Conservation • Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Conservation • Pollution and Waste Prevention, Reduction and Management and Environmental Cleanup
Business Scan Using O*NET Taxonomy and other State’s definitions, we have estimated Idaho’s green economy. Hope to use this as a baseline to compare our survey results O*NET SOC – 140 Unique SOC NAICS – 41 3-digit NAICS identified from other states as potential targeted industries
Vacancy Survey • Our first ever vacancy survey • Funded with WIA healthcare and green jobs grant money • Surveying randomly selected 5000 Idaho businesses by mail • Screening question to determine industries to sample for green jobs • In field April 1; report available August 31
Green Jobs Survey • Showpiece of the grant • Survey 5000 randomly selected Idaho businesses by mail • Will ask for employers to identify jobs and occupational information related to our green definition. • In field in June 21, report available in Dec.
Skills and Certifications Survey • Interview and talk with program directors of green related programs • Green related skills • Educational opportunities for green jobs • Completion rates for green training programs
