  3. Compare Mark is 6 years old Heidi is 4 years old Rick is 10 months old Mark is young. Rick is the youngest. Heidi is youngerthan Mark.

  4. Compare This sack of potatoes weighs 6 kg. This suitcase weighs 4 kg. These two bags weigh 8 kg. The sack is heavierthan the suitcase. These two bags are the heaviest of all. The suitcase is heavy.

  5. There are three degrees of adjectives: • Positive • Comparative • Superlative

  6. The Positive The positive degree is used for one person or thing.

  7. The Positive Paul is short. Ann is thin.

  8. The Comparative The comparative degree is used when comparing two persons or things

  9. The Comparative Paul is shorter than Rick. Rebecca is thinner than Ann.

  10. The Superlative The superlative degree is used when we compare more thanthree persons or things.

  11. The Superlative Mary is the shortest girl in class. Rebecca is the thinnest woman in Malta.

  12. Main Points

  13. You add ‘-er’ for the comparative and ‘-est’ for the superlative of some adjectives. cheap - cheaper - cheapest hard - harder - hardest weak - weaker - weakest old - older - oldest

  14. If they end in ‘-e’, you add ‘-r’ and ‘-st’ safe - safer - safest nice - nicer - nicest close - closer - closest

  15. Some double the last letter. big - bigger - biggest fat - fatter - fattest sad - sadder - saddest

  16. Some change ‘y’ to ‘i’ heavy - heavier - heaviest funny - funnier - funniest busy - busier - busiest

  17. To compare adjectives with two or more syllables use MORE in the Comparative MOST in the Superlative LESS in the Comparative LEAST in the Superlative
