  1. HUBBLE’S LAW:  THE STORY OF AN EXPANDING UNIVERSE  QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED:  1.IS THE UNIVERSE EXPANDING?  2. IF SO, WILL IT SLOW DOWN, SPEED UP OR CONTRACT?  3. HOW DO WE KNOW THE UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING?  4. WHAT ROLE DOES RELATIVITY PLAY IN OUR CHANGING UNIVERSE?  5. DOES HUBBLE’S LAW HOLD ON THE “GRAND SCHEME” OF THE UNIVERSE

  2. A SUMMARY TABLE FOR DISTANCE AND VELOCITY FOR SEVERAL GALAXIES.

  3. NON-RELATIVISTIC DOPPLER SHIFT CALCULATIONS. NON-RELATIVISTIC DOPPLER SHIFT CALCULATIONS.

  4. HOW TO MEASURE THE PATTERN OF THE GALAXY. MAKE SEVERAL MEASUREMENTS ACROSS THE GALAXY AND AVERAGE THEM. DO THIS FOR ALL OF THE PICTURES SHOWN.

  5. A PLOT OF A NUMBER OF GALAXIES TO TEST HUBBLE’S LAW.

  6. QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED • In the plot of many galaxies to produce Hubbles’s law there are three smooth curves passing through the data. Use your textbook and study the implications of the changes in the nature of the universe as the “linear” plot given by the simplified form of the Hubble law . i. e. discuss whether the universe will collapse, expand for ever or just simply “rock along”. Use the numbered curves 1, 2 and 3 to explain your position in the discussion. • Duplicate the measurements and graph in this activity for credit for this exercise.
