Characteristics of animals to the climate of the S.W –Many animals in the SW have :- • LOW WATER REQUIREMENT – to survive the summer drought & many get much of their water from their food • Eg. Reptiles need very little water Kangaroos tend to eat at dawn & dusk • HEAT AVOIDANCE – many feed at dawn & dusk & some are nocturnal • Eg. Wombat is nocturnal & stays in burrows at night Kangaroos tend to eat at dawn & dusk

Western grey kangaroos feed mostly on grass but will browse upon certain native shrubs. They are strictly herbivorous and use microorganisms in the caecum to break down the cellulose of these plants. They can survive on plants high in fiber but low in nitrogen, and require very little water. KANGARROS & WOMBATS Requires very little water – gets Most of its water from green food Lives in burrows to escape daytime heat & is nocturnal WMOBAT Western grey kangaroo
