E N D
...because Ebay just sucks sometimes Devon Kim GulfE
What's wrong with Ebay? • Artificially inflates prices for a lot of things • Collectible items, even retail stuff (bid wars) • A whole bunch of useless products to search through • You have to search for what you want • “Grocery store syndrome” - impulse buys
Example of Ebay Suckage Why do these CDs cost $100+ when I could have gotten them from a local dealer for $10? Nobody I know pays that much for a dumb CD! People who pay $500+ for CDs = ripped off
What is Gulfe? • A bad parody of Ebay's name (laugh – haha) • A system that forces sellers to respond to buyers' demand • A system that allows sellers to directly contact buyers that already have interest in your product • Another social networking site?!?!
What is Gulfe NOT? • MySimon, Dealtime, etc. • Those “professional services” sites where a project goes to the lowest bidder • Gulfe is for general goods and services, not JUST one kind of thing • Another social networking site (I hope) • Ebay... of course
Desktop / laptop client GulfE server ** Desktop-oriented content WAP-oriented content * Mobile client High-level Software Architecture Pretty simple really!
Example Use #1 • Clint is looking for an extremely rare (50 copies) out of print demo tape by his favorite band. • Hits Ebay and sees it going for $200. • He heads to Gulfe.com, posts his trade list publicly, and puts the demo tape as a high priority. • He's contacted by Bobby, who has the tape and is willing to part with it in exchange for $30 and several CDs from Clint's trade list. • Clint receives the demo tape and Bobby gets some cash and a lot of CDs he always wanted.
Example Use #2 • Tara is shopping at a thrift store and finds a shirt that Sheree was looking for. • She whips out her camera phone, takes a couple pictures, and posts it onto Sheree's want list via Gulfe.com's mobile-users' service. In the process, Tara let Sheree know where the store is via GPS. • Later, Sheree logs onto Gulfe.com and finds that Tara found the shirt she was looking for, which was coincidentally at a location not too far from her apartment. • Sheree quickly runs to the store and grabs her prized shirt before a homeless man reeking of alcohol and urine is about to lay his hands on it.
Feasible? • Probably not as big as Ebay, ever • Suited best for trusted communities – but that limits the power of other buyers! • Sometimes it's just faster to write to a newsgroup or post it on a message board • Perhaps not enough incentive for people to sell stuff • ...but it seems pretty easy to develop!
