The purpose-built sector • An estimated 450,000 bed spaces in the sector • 404,000 covered by three Codes of Standards: • Two run by ANUK/Unipol • One run by UUK • Increasing financial pressure on institutions resulting in rapidly rising rents • Traditionally largely owned and run by institutions • Now a more complex picture with private providers’ market share growing • Recent fall in student numbers means that there is now an oversupply in some areas • However, as yet, there has been little competition on price

Accommodation Costs Survey • Research conducted every 2 – 3 years by NUS and Unipol • Aimed at institutions and private providers of purpose-built student accommodation (or halls of residence) • This year’s survey covered around 85 per cent of bed spaces • There have been huge changes in recent years to: • The level of rent charged • The types of room on offer • Who is providing these rooms
