  2. Welcome to the Department of Computer Science and Systems Analysis

  3. Doug TroyProfessor & Chair, Computer Science & Systems Analysis Departmenttroyda@muohio.edu

  4. Our Department Offers 3 Majors • Computer Science • Systems Analysis • Computer Engineering

  5. Computer Engineering … an exciting discipline that blends topics from computer science (such as software) and electrical engineering (such as digital hardware) to create digital systems that benefit society. Computer engineers will be responsible for designing the next generation of “smart devices” that combine electronics and computers in devices ranging from every-day appliances such as TVs, to automobiles, and to robots designed to explore the solar system.

  6. Computer Science …provides graduates with a thorough understanding of the key principles and practices of computing, and the mathematical and scientific principles that underpin them. The program emphasizes software design and development. Computer Science graduates will lead the way in creating the next generation of software for computer systems ranging from individual personal digital assistants to the software used in the Internet.

  7. Systems Analysis …the process of working with people who have engineering and business problems that can be solved in a logical way using computers. This program emphasizes a holistic approach to problem solving that combines computer science, math, specialized knowledge (such as business) and communication skills. Graduates of this program have gone on to become leaders in the consulting industry as well as in a variety of organizations ranging from entrepreneurial startups to Fortune 500 companies.

  8. What is Computer Science? • What can a computer do? • Theory of Computation • What should a computer do? • Social Impact • How can it be done? • Architecture • Programming and Algorithms • How should it be done? • Software Engineering

  9. What Is Systems Analysis? • Analyzing and solving problems in a logical structured way • Working with clients • Designing a computer system using knowledge of Computer Science • Often requires mathematical analysis (operations research) • Applications oriented

  10. What Is Computer Engineering? • Design and develop digital systems that benefit society • A combination of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering • CS: Algorithms, programming, computer architecture • EE: Electrical circuit design, design of digital systems • Includes courses in engineering, math, physics and chemistry • Integrate software and hardware into a working system

  11. What Would You Learn? • Computer programming in Java and other languages • Computer sciencefundamentals • Software design & testing • System Design in a team environment • CS: Depth in Computer Science and applications • SAN: Depth in math modeling and simulation • CE: Depth in hardware and circuit design
