Ord Bridge: Past • Built in 1886, Ord Bridge is one of the oldest bridges Singpaore inherited from its colonial past. Even so, its orgin still remains unknown to this day. Some believe that it was named after the first London - appointed Governor of the Straits Settlements, Colonel Sir Harry St George Ord, while others believe that it was named such because one end of the bridge leads to Magazine Road, at which there was an Ordnance Depot where the British soldiers stored their artillery, and that it was later renamed after Colonel Ord.
The abbreviation of Ordnance was coincidentally the same as Colonel Ord’s name, thus the different beliefs. In the past, Ord Bridge was also known as Toddy Bridge, Green Bridge or ABC Bridge. • The compromise between those two views is that Ordiance Bridge was the original name but it was later changed to Ord Bridge in honour of Colonel Ord.
