Richmond-Burton Football • School of about 800 • 85 -100 players in program over the last five years • 55 - 65% are multi-sport athletes • Many 3-sport athletes
RB’s Problems • Mentality: off-season is June – August • Great summer attendance, but not in winter and spring • Local trainers/gyms = not seeing players • Player’s bubble
Off-Season Competition Program • Tie summer incentives into winter and spring lifting • Make players accountable in a variety of areas all year long • Keep football in their minds all year long • Program based on a variety of examples
Organization & Components • 6-8 teams, each with a captain • Each team: 8 – 10 players drafted by team captain • Football coaches are drafted to a team as well • Score or lose points in these areas: • Weight Room Attendance • Academics & Discipline • Other R-B Sports/Activities • School Spirit • Community Service • Miscellaneous • 3 segments: 3rd quarter, 4th quarter, and summer
Captains • Chosen by coaches • Past years • Pick leaders, as well as potential leaders • Pick players, as well as subs/2nd stringers • Shows loyalty, expectations, etc. • Provide players with the opportunity to lead a small group • Talk to captains before starting program • Purpose, expectations, offer rides, academic help, etc. • Responsible for taking summer attendance • Leadership Program 2012
Leadership Program • Captains meet with me every other Friday before school • Binders: readings, activities, handouts, etc. • Resources: • Becoming a Leader the Annapolis Way by W. Brad Johnson & Gregory Harper • Bo’s Lasting Lessons by Bo Schembechler • Competitive Leadership by Brian Billick • It’s Your Ship by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff • The Winner’s Manual by Jim Tressel • Select chapters from each book for their reading

Weight Room Attendance • 2-3 days per week, 1 hour per day • Juniors/Sophs: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday • Freshmen: Tuesday & Thursday • Scoring: • Juniors/Sophs: Progressive Points • 1 point for 1st day, 2 points for 2nd day, 3 points for 3rd day • Freshmen: 2 pts. per day in winter and spring • Competitive Weights Classes – warm-up only
Academics & Discipline • Points for 3rd & 4th Quarter grades • Scoring: • A: +4 • B: +3 • C: +2 • D: -2 • F: -3 • AP/Honors not worth more points • No points for Pass/Fail classes • Disciplinary Referral: • 3 Tiers: -4 points (i.e. tardies), -8 points (i.e. cell phones, swearing), -12 points (i.e. stealing, cheating) • Discretion used in certain instances • Administrative help • Email notifications through Skyward • Print and file these
Other Sports/Activities • 10 points per week of season • Starting in January • Through end of season • Communication with other coaches is crucial • Encourages athletes to participate and compete in other sports & activities • Competition is a good thing! • Carryover skills/attributes
School Spirit • Student support for football is phenomenal • Need to show similar support • Each player receives a card • Name on it • Ten events • Coach has to sign and date card • 2 points per event • Double points for non-athletic events • Replace damaged, not lost, cards
Community Service • Area in need of most improvement • 5 points per hour of service (unlimited) • All team members must have 2 hours by the end of July • Prefer these to be done as a team • Idea must be approved by coach (form) • Signature from supervising adult
Miscellaneous • Speed camp – run by our track coach • 2 days per week in winter • 2 points per day • Does not replace lifting requirement • Other opportunities as they arise • Don’t want to go crazy with these though • Emphasis needs to be on key areas
Competition Day • Last day before our July 4th break • First round – station rotation • Push ups, Pull Ups, Sled Push, Obstacle Course, Bench Press • Average Reps (total reps divided by players) • Second round – head to head • Brackets • Tug of War (2 types), Harness Pull, Relay Race, Med Ball Relay
Competition Day (cont.) • Scoring: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (based on number of teams) • Team earns points for every event to keep it interesting • Total points get added to overall team points for summer segment • Winners get card for free pizza and Gatorade (and bragging rights…)
Points • 3 segments – points start over at beginning • Post standings around school every 2 weeks • Ranked by average number of points per team • Other students pay attention to this as well • Captains get points sheets for their team • Discuss other topics at meetings • File copies of sheets in binder • Points sheets • Discipline sheets with deducted points
Rewards • Individual improvement: strength, agility, community service, camaraderie, competitiveness, academic standing, etc. • Tangible rewards for points based on total points as a team (all must have community service) • 2750: yellow R-B off-season t-shirt • 3000: maroon R-B off-season t-shirt & shorts • 3250: black R-B off-season t-shirt, shorts, & R-B mini-helmet
Winners & Losers • Winning team: • Names in fall program • Recognized at end of season banquet • Ideally, some kind of “traveling trophy” but I haven’t figured that out yet. • Losing Team: • Clean & reorganize weight room at end of the summer • Used to extend into season – bad idea! • Segment winners get free pizza card • Segment losers are not “punished”
Issues that have come up • Injured players? – physical therapy schedule • Sick players? – excuse them or give them points? • New players? • Criteria to meet before being placed on a team • How to score week between seasons (rest week)? • Financial commitments for rewards • Fundraising incentive for players • Booster Club/Dad’s Club • Local business support
Advice • Communicate with coaches, captains, and players constantly • Be positive – negative things will occur, focus on the positives your kids will get out of it • Be organized – binder works well, Excel spreadsheets, posting the points constantly keeps me on top of it • Give it time – players have to learn this is part of being a Richmond-Burton Rocket
Results • 75% of players accounted for in winter • Spring number is always higher • 16 – 22 daily since program implemented in January • 20 in winter sport • Freshmen are important to Juniors • Players know who is showing up & who isn’t
