Earthquakes Focus • Occur when built up pressure from moving plates is released • Point where the rock first breaks, or moves, causing the earthquake • Energy is released in waves • The closer to the focus you are, the stronger the waves will be • Waves can damage structures • Can cause Tsunami (large wave of water that destroys coastal areas- can be 30 meters {98.4 feet} high)

Richter Scale Seismograph • Used to compare the strengths of earthquakes • Scale of 1 to 10 • Each increasing number is 10 times stronger than the preceding number • Damage is caused in 5+ earthquakes • The Richter Scale number will be higher the closer to the focus the measurement is taken • Instrument for measuring the strength of earthquake • Based on energy released
