  5. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet Children’s Advocate John Walsh, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Cox Communications released the results of a Teen Internet Survey, May 2006. Here are some statistics about youth and internet use…

  6. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • Out of 1,160 teens, ages 13-17 during March 2006… • 14% of teens surveyed had face-to-face meetings with people they’ve “met” on the internet • 61% of 13-17 year olds have a personal profile on sites such as MySpace, Friendster, Xanga. Half have posted photos of themselves online. • Older teens (16-17) and girls represent the majority of youths who use the internet for social interaction, meeting friends, and networking.

  7. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • Out of 503 parents of teens, during Feb. 2005… • 77% of parents were between ages 34-54 • 72% of parents say their teenager(s) do not instant message with people other than family, school friends, or people they personally know. • A majority (over 57%) were unable to correctly decipher the meanings of several common Internet messaging abbreviations.

  13. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • The Name Game • True or False: People cannot find you by name only. • Names, coupled with almost ANY other information on a profile, can be enough to search information. • Helpful Hints when you use the internet: • 1) Use nickname that your friends/family will know. • 2) Use your initials only. • 3) Do NOT use your last name.

  14. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • Picture This • Posting photographs is common (Profiles, online photo albums) • Photographs CAN be altered. • Here are some tips for using photographs on the internet: • - Use lower resolution photos • - Use photos taken from a distance • - Do NOT send photos to individuals via email • - Do NOT use photos of yourself at all.

  15. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • Direct Information • Giving Phone Numbers, Name, Addresses, etc. • Never a good idea to give out personal information. • Phones AND Cell #s can be used to trace information • Tips on using Direct Information on the internet: • - Do NOT unless on Secure Site (https) • - Do NOT unless there is an acceptable privacy policy • - Use an email address for personal contact.

  16. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • Indirect Information • Information that does not specifically express who you are. • Can STILL be used to reveal your identity (Examples: Place of Employment, School, Extracurricular Activities, etc.) • Tips on how to safely use Indirect Information on the internet: • - Be general (Work at a shoe store, work at a mall) • - Go to websites that are specific for certain interests (Classmates.com, Facebook.com)

  17. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • Location, Location, Location • Computer placement is key to preventing youth from accessing in appropriate materials at home. • Keep the computer(s) in visible, public places (living room, office, etc.) Out with the Bad, In with the Good • Avoid paranoid spying, use filters. • Password protect your internet explorer settings. • Enforce limited online time.

  18. www.HIS-Space.comOur Youth and the Internet • ADULTS MUST… • VISIT THE INTERNET • - Do your research. Be credible rather than paranoid. • ENGAGE YOUR KIDS IN A DIALOGUE • - Statistics indicate that youth are receptive to communication about all issues, INCLUDING internet. • GET YOUTH INVOLVED • - Youth ministry activities (more than just social stuff!) • - Youth involvement SHOULD include adult involvement.
