The breath is the ocean, the voice is the boat which floats on the ocean! Nature gave us the voice, we cannot change it, but we can educate the breath and learn to control it. This - this constitutes the whole method of singing. Vocal Wisdom-Giovanni Lamperti
Breathe IN • Anatomy of Breathing • Correct Direction • Use Entire Abdominal Wall • Check • Work Lower • Work Upper • Put them together
ExhalationBreath Management • Once “filled”, what happens next? • Use entire abdominal wall on exhalation • 8 + 4 count Hiss Exercise • Scale Exercise • Apply to song
WAIT!! You forgot the Ribs! If the upper abdominal area can be expanded during inhalation AND If use of the upper abdominal area can be delayed until the end during exhalation THEN The RIBS were expanded throughout both phases, without any undue tension or effort
More than FUEL! • We want to have a freely produced sound, requiring • Open, relaxed throat • Gently dropped and relaxed jaw • Relaxed tongue, lying on the floor of the mouth • Slightly raised palate • Uplifted and Natural expression • Inhale like you want to sing! • Think ahead • Eliminate tension • Silent Breath
Breathing and Space • Can help to create uplifted and open singing space • Inhale through mouth only • Inhale through nose only • Inhale through both, together – Feel openness and space • Breathe “above the note”
Putting it Together Questions?
Posture directly relates to confidence and proper breathing. • Proper breathing technique (inhalation) promotes full, deep, effortless expansion (more than fuel) • Proper breath management (exhalation) allows one to sing longer phrases with more connection, vocal energy, and confidence. • Inhalation with the intension of creating Space and Lift promotes vocal evenness and resonance produced with ease.
