Using directbehavioral observation (avoiding observer bias): • play-based assessment • sensorimotor play = environmental stimulation • unoccupied play = random & purposeless • solitary play = playing alone (independent play) • onlooker play = observing others at play • parallel play = play alongside, but not sharing • associative play = common activity & interacting (cooperative play) • exploratory play =intended purpose of object • dramatic play = imagination & pretend (symbolic play) • rough-and-tumble play = physical contact • anecdotal record= incident report • time sampling= behavior frequency over time • event sampling= context of behavior
