Multivariate Analyses Categorical variables a trivariate example
Overview • Purpose • Table set-up • For analyses • For presentation • Interpreting results • Understanding the table • Calculating and interpreting percentage differences • Using SPSS to get 3-Way Tables
Purpose • To examine how a third variable affects the relationship between an IV and DV. • Does the relationship between IV and DV vary across levels of T (control variable)? If so how? • Next class review how to examine and interpret certain outcomes or changes in IV x DV tables when introduce T. This is called the elaboration paradigm. • Can be extended to 4-Way tables and beyond
Relationships to Examine Control Variable: Category 1 IV DV Control Variable: Category 2 DV IV
Interpreting The Table • Examine each subtable of IV by DV as did with two-way tables. • To examine relationships across categories of T, examine percentage differences (), For IV by categories DV within T categories. Compare () across categories of T. • Note if Differences (). Consider monotonocity. • Steady increases (or decreases) across the cells of a crosstab, indicating an increase (or decrease) in the IV is related to an increase (or decrease) in the DV.
Calculating Percentage Differences A(t1)% - C(t11)% = AC(1) A(t2)% - C(t21)% = AC(2)
Comparing Percentage Differences • Calculate Delta for Every Row in each 2-way table within categories of t. • Compare the Delta for row 1 of 2-way for category t1 to row 2 of 2-way for for category t2. • AC(1) compared to AC(2) • Do this for each row and see how different percentage differences are across categories of t. • If find a differences them know that the relationship between IV and DV is affected by T
Using SPSS to get 3-Way Tables • Open dataset • Got to ANALYZE procedure • Go to DESCRIBE • Go to CROSSTAB • In row place the DV • In column place the IV • In layer place T • Click on cell option • Select percentage columns
