Vietnam Background • Vietnam as an area, if not a unified nation, has been subject to continuous Chinese political, social, economic and cultural influence since before Christ • 214 B.C.- Chinese armies overran parts of Vietnam • 208 B.C.- Independent state of Vietnam established from several disparate provinces

  2. Vietnam Background • 111 B.C.- Chinese dynasty conquers Vietnam down to Danang area • 111 B.C.- 939 A.D.- Chinese rule (many revolts) • 939 A.D.- Chinese driven out • 1215- Monguls conquer Peking and attack Vietnam (guerrilla war)

  3. Vietnam Background • 17th-18th centuries- Many European contacts • 1802- Emperor Gia Long unites Vietnam into single country with current boundaries • 1845- First American contact/U.S. marine unit lands • Mid 1800’s- Increasing French presence in Vietnam

  4. Vietnam Background • 1883- French gain sovereignty over Vietnam • 1887- French gain sovereignty over Laos and Cambodia • 1880’s-WWI- Series of nationalist revolts • WWI- Ho Chi Minh
