  1. LING 402 - ACADEMIC DISCOURSE PRACTICES: A critical approach Week 7 BRINGING READING INTO WRITING -2

  2. Session Outline Theory into Practice • Writing a text drawing on another source • Analysing the use of the other source Summary points

  3. Why do we bring reading into our writing? 1. To explain the background to our study. 2. To show that we have understood what we have read. 3. To relate a writer’s work to that of others. 4. To provide authoritative support for our own argument. 5. To show the relevance of a writer’s work to our argument/study. 6. To show the contribution a writer has made to the field. 7. To evaluate the work of a writer (positively or negatively). 8. To show the flaws in a writer’s argument. 9. To show the gap in the literature which your work will fill 10.To limit what you are going to discuss in your work 11.To position yourself in relation to what’s been said and others….

  4. Choose one or more of the reasons for bringing reading into writing (or use your own) • In groups write a short piece about Standard English, drawing on the Quirk text. • Write your final version onto an OHT

  5. Preparation for the next two weeks’ ‘Writing Workshop’ sessions In the second hour of weeks 8 and 9, we will offer direct feedback on your draft writing. In order to do this we need about six people each week to volunteer their work for discussion. Please send, by last thing on Tuesday, by email to Carol and Roz (learningdevelopment@lancs.ac.uk;r.ivanic@lancs.ac.uk ), • About 3-4 pages of draft writing, • A brief outline to show where the draft text will fit in to your essay • A note saying whether you are willing to have it discussed by the whole class, or only by a group of friends For anyone who sends a draft, even by the end of Wednesday, Carol is offering to give detailed feedback on it at the end of the session.
