LFS data collections designs in Europe: Present situation and proposal for the future Arturo de la Fuente Eurostat arturo.de-la-fuente@ec.europa.eu
Parts of this presentation: • Focus on structural variables and ad-hoc modules • 1) Summary of national LFS collection designs for structural variables and ad-hoc modules • 2) A Eurostat proposal for the future • Presently in discussion in LAMAS
Present situation in ESS 1 country 18 countries 3 countries 6 countries 3 countries
How to make it in practice? 1. Arrange LFS variables in modules (by homogeneous contents) 2. Group modules in very few blocks (with same periodicity) 3. Associate blocks to sample waves
Which modules? (list not final) • 11 quarterly modules (52 variables) • 7 annual modules (24 variables) • 3 biennial modules (15 variables) • 1 AHM (11 variables)
Which annual blocks? AHM in one block or the other depending on the subject that year
Which block in which wave? - Freedom for NSIs to establish wave structure and to decide which block in which wave - Provided some conditions met
Advantages of this approach 1. LFS modular structure used for sub-sampling 2. Rational use of the sub-sampling for structural variables 3. AHM and structural variables integrated 4. Harmonised wave approach implementation across countries 5. Better quality for AHM (no seasonal effects, joint exploitation with non-AHM variables)
