Summary • Big job - 3,500km of rivers not in good ecological health • Learnt a lot so far through WEF & pilot projects that we can now apply • Complex task; cost, scale, complexity and feasibility issues • Requires a step-change in our approach • Given the benefits to wildlife, the economy and people, this is a job we should be doing
Basis of approach • Strengthen the delivery framework • Work in partnership with other delivery bodies • Work on a voluntary basis with private land managers • Focus work where the benefits of river improvements outweigh the impacts on land-use • Build on success to date – in particular pilots and WEF • Improve underlying data and classification tools
