Notes: Cell Division Objective: Know the 6 stages of the cell cycle. Read pgs. 129-136.
Cell Cycle • Cell cycle - the regular sequence of growth and division of a cell. The cell cycle begins when the cell is formed and ends when the cell divides and forms new cells.
Chromosomes • Chromosomes: The coiled structure of DNA that forms in the cell nucleus during cell division.
Chromosomes • Chromosomes are made up of many genes joined together like beads on a string. Although you have only 23 pairs of chromosomes, your body cells contain more than 60,000 genes. Each of the genes controls a particular trait.
Chromatids • Chromatids: One of the identical rods of a chromosome.
Centromere • Centromere: The structure that holds the chromatids together.
Asexual Reproduction • Asexual Reproduction: A single parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent. Video
Stages of the Cell Cycle • Interphase: Intelligent • Mitosis • Prophase: People • Metaphase: Meet • Anaphase: At • Telophase: Three O • Cytokinesis: Clock
Interphase • 1. Interphase: Cell grows to maturity • Copies DNA • Cell prepares to reproduce Video
Mitosis • Mitosis is the process in which a cell replicates it’s nucleus, stages 2-5. • Mitosis is a special stage in the cell cycle.
Mitosis • 2. Prophase: Chromatin condenses to form chromosomes, spindle fibers form, and nuclear membrane breaks down. Video
Mitosis • 3. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up at equator and attach to a spindle fiber at its centromere. Video
Mitosis • 4. Anaphase: Spindle fibers shorten and chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell. Video
Mitosis • 5. Telophase: A new nuclear membrane forms around each new set of chromosomes. Video
End of Mitosis • The nucleus has now been copied and the cell is waiting to divide into two identical cells.
Cytokinesis • 6. Cytokinesis: Cell membrane pinches off and forms two identical daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes.
