  2. Brief History • Office Depot was founded in 1986 and opened its first store in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. By the end of 1990, had 173 stores in 27 states and became the largest office products retailer in North America. • Between 1992 and 1998, Office Depot began to expand internationally. Starting in Canada, by ‘98 they had stores in Hungary, Poland, Thailand, Mexico, France and Japan. • In 1998, the company also expanded to internet sales launching www.officedepot.com. By 2005, they 30 international web sites with e-commerce sales totaling $3.1 billion. • Today, Office Depot employs about 42,000 associates in 1,600 retail stores worldwide. Annual sales total $14.5 billion with $4.2 billon coming from online. • This company provides office supplies and services in more countries than any other company, operating in 49 countries.
