  2. Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration to remember, honor and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. • Celebrated in Mexico and certain parts of the US and Central America. Day of the Dead

  3. Day of the Dead is a celebration, it is not scary or sad, it is reflective. • Death is viewed as the continuation of life, instead of fearing death, they embrace it. Life was a dream and only in death did they become fully awake.

  4. It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on Oct. 31st and leave Nov 2nd.

  5. In Mexico, the streets near cemeteries are filled with bright colors, flowers, candy, skulls, skeletons and parades.

  6. Families decorate cemeteries where their loved ones are buried. They decorate gravesites and sit on picnic blankets and eat the favorite food of their loved ones. Cemeteries

  7. In larger areas families also make Altars in their house dedicated to their lost love ones. Altars

  12. Drink: Water is placed at the altar. People believe that the spirits are thirsty after their journey back. • Pan de Muerto: or Bread of the Dead is a tradition. It can be cut into shapes or round. Food/Drink

  16. Mask are a huge part of the Day of the Dead Celebrations. Families make mask and decorate them to wear during Dia de los Muertos. Mask

  17. You will be making your own Day of the Dead mask. You must include: • Symbols for the four main Elements Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. • At least two other symbols flowers, skulls, skeletons ect. • You will complete at least two sketches. (1/2 a page each!!!!!!)

  20. Native American Masks Native American masks had many uses: medicinal, spiritual, and sometimes entertainment. Many Native American tribes believed that when certain animal masks were worn during specific tribal rituals that the person who wore the mask would take on certain characteristics of the animal depicted, They believed that the spirit of the animal would enter that person while they were in the mask.

  21. African Masks During celebrations, initiations, crop harvesting, war preparation, peace and trouble times, masks are often worn by a dancer. The masks can be worn in three different ways: vertically covering the face: as helmets, encasing the entire head, and as crest, resting upon the head, commonly covered by material as part of a disguise. African masks often represent a spirit and it is strongly believed that the spirit of the ancestors possesses the wearer. Ritual ceremonies generally depict deities, spirits of ancestors, mythological beings, good and or evil, the dead, animal spirits, and other beings believed to have power over humanity.
