The economy before • The “Roaring Twenties” • The unemployment rate was low • Stock prices were rising • Gross National Product rose
The collapse of the stock market • Stock prices sharply increased • People began to invest more on the stock market • Number of shares traded rose from 318 million in 1920 to more than 1 billion in 1929
The collapse of the stock market • People became aware of troubles in the economy. • Rumors spread • People started selling their stocks • Bankers tried to prevent the collapse by buying stocks

Bank Failure • Banks lost financial resources • No deposit insurance • Nervous depositors came for their money • More banks closed
Farm Failures • People could not afford foods • Farmers could not sell their goods • The Dust Bowl • Farmers could not pay for land and equipment • Farms went bankrupt or suffered foreclosure
The Dust Bowl • Farm land became vulnerable • Drought lasted for years • Wind storm stripped away top soils
Unemployment • After the crash, economic activity fell • GNP fell more than 40% by 1933 • Unemployment reached 25%
