  4. The causes of Great Depression

  5. The economy before • The “Roaring Twenties” • The unemployment rate was low • Stock prices were rising • Gross National Product rose

  6. The collapse of the stock market • Stock prices sharply increased • People began to invest more on the stock market • Number of shares traded rose from 318 million in 1920 to more than 1 billion in 1929

  7. The collapse of the stock market • People became aware of troubles in the economy. • Rumors spread • People started selling their stocks • Bankers tried to prevent the collapse by buying stocks

  8. Major factors • Bank Failure • Farm Failure • Unemployment

  9. Bank Failure • Banks lost financial resources • No deposit insurance • Nervous depositors came for their money • More banks closed

  10. Farm Failures • People could not afford foods • Farmers could not sell their goods • The Dust Bowl • Farmers could not pay for land and equipment • Farms went bankrupt or suffered foreclosure

  11. The Dust Bowl • Farm land became vulnerable • Drought lasted for years • Wind storm stripped away top soils

  12. Unemployment • After the crash, economic activity fell • GNP fell more than 40% by 1933 • Unemployment reached 25%

  15. Agriculture Cont. • Consumer’s demand for food decreased • Consumer Spending on Food: $11.5 • Surplus of production led to decrease in farm prices • By 1933, prices were down more than 50% • Bankrupt and Foreclosure • Dust Bowl add a greater damage

  16. Industry • Companies • Industrial production failed • Companies were ruined • Corporate earnings have failed • The total market capitalization dramatically decreased • Industrial Workers • Unemployment rate increased (3.2% to 25%) • According to AARL, 17 million were unemployed

  17. American Family • Socially • Men • Women • Children • Economically • Hoovervilles - shantytowns • Earnings: • no income • 10 - 12 cents/day

  18. Ethnic and Racial Minorities • Social Problems • Racial Discrimination (Prejudice) • Violence • Severe Immigration restrictions • Return to their homelands
