The Need • More than 1 million Australians are excluded from mainstream life and employment due to disability, illness or other disadvantage • Australia has seventh lowest employment rate for people with a disability, in OECD • 81% of people without a disability are in the labour force • BUT • For those with a mental illness: 29% • For those with a disability: 53% • For indigenous Australians: 57% • For refugees and asylum seekers: 58%
Our Purpose • To work with entrepreneurs, community organisations, businesses and government to grow and develop social enterprises in the ACT that are; • self sustaining; and • that increase employment opportunities for people that are disadvantaged in the labour market.

What is a social enterprise? Characteristics • A business with a commercial and social purpose • Selling : Charging a fee for a product or service • 25% + staff from marginalised backgrounds • Supportive and integrated work environment • Modifications of design and culture of the workplace • All staff are paid the award or productivity rate • Provides the same work opportunities, rights and obligations to all employees
Benefits of a social enterprise • Social Enterprises offer real jobs • Employment offers people with disabilities significant benefits • Overcoming social exclusion • Transitionary or ongoing source of employment • Provide an inclusive work opportunity • Reduce number of people on government support • Sustainable source of income
Case Study : BlackStar Coffee • Social Enterprise - BlackStar Coffee • Time frame – established 2007 • Social Enterprise Hub Assistance – Accelerator program; mentor; NAB loan assistance; pro bono legal assistance. • 2009 Turnover - $250,000 • Number of employees – 9 people from marginalised backgrounds, refugee or long term unemployed. • 3 full time • 6 part time • 1 is now working fulltime elsewhere • One young mother who due to mental health issues had not worked for many years, received training and support and part-time work but has recently relocated to Toowoomba. Now she has a CV with details of her job skills and referee.
