  1. Design Communication and Collaboration Rudi Stouffs, Jan Kooistra, Bige Tunçer, Evren Akar DRN 2005, Eindhoven Bige Tunçer, Evren Akar

  2. InfoBase Start: 2000 Funding: August 2002 – December 2004 Interdisciplinary collaboration Goal: Teaching students how to deal with metadata in the context of their learning processes for the exchange of knowledge and information within a professional community of a network of students, teachers and researchers

  3. Metadata – what is it? metadata • title • type and format • author information • action moments • thumbnail • keywords • access information • access rights • grades • ratings • comments InfoBase MediatedDiscourse

  4. Assumptions • students learn from each other • both individual and group work • upon own initiative and under supervision • including reflection and feedback

  5. InfoBase – goal(s) Goal: Teaching students how to deal with metadata in the context of their learning processes for the exchange of knowledge and information within a professional community of a network of students, teachers and researchers • research related • didactic • technical • strategic

  6. Goal – research related A scientific approach to deal with information and communication through the application of metadata • scientific evaluation The metadata system as complex adaptive system • the system is the means as well as the result of social processes • flexibility – changing circumstances • robustness – value matrix

  7. Goal – didactic BSc1+2 submit search/retrieve BSc4 analyze reuse BSc5 keep discard Development of a method to add, exchange and manage metadata in the context of learning processes Implementation in a learning path with increasing responsibility for the student • programmed instructions, • network exercises and • own management and community forming

  8. Goal – technical A digital environment for the support of a learning path with which students can store, exchange and manage the (scientific) information that they collect and produce, individually, in groups, and collectively, in an independent manner, with the help of metadata InfoBase StudentWork

  9. Goal – strategic To encourage students through the system to learn from each other and to learn to work together as young professionals by offering them the possibility to compare their assignments and designs directly and immediately Teach students to deal with the relativity of the system and with the paradox that a database loses informative quality when it is cleaned up to be a “neat” database

  10. How it works

  11. The design process as information process validating discarding searching generating qualities metadata information process communicating storing distributing exchanging

  12. Correspondence in the information process correspondence lays claim to metadata data to assess/acknowledgeclaims gains quality(four dimensions)

  13. the factual elements that one uses to express the idea components /characteristics Facts the influence of the design on the user and vice versa idea / building type the idea thatone tries to represent in the design CLAIMS Construct Relations users /culture Emotion feeling /opinion the emotion that the design elicits KeySet – universally applicable metadata system

  14. The use of metadata – example Nice weather for the beach! weather report • construct: It means…It is meant to be… • relations: They know more about it • facts: It is… objective • emotion: I find… subjective people listening to the radio sun is shining; no precipitation; 80º Fahrenheit; gentle breeze. nice indeed, let’s go! oh no! hot again!

  15. Practical example – BSc2 workshop

  16. the facts roof detail • façade detail • other constructive detail • aluminum and concrete • steel and stone • wood and glass • … • the relations reference detail for architects and structural engineers the construct elements joined on a plane– joined on a line– joined at one point– –in the plane of the element –at the corner of the element –between the elements the emotion strong robust beautiful … the factual elements that one uses to express the idea components /characteristics Facts the influence of the design on the user and vice versa idea / building type the idea thatone tries to represent in the design CLAIMS Construct Relations users /culture Emotion feeling /opinion the emotion that the design elicits Practical example – metadata

  17. StudentWork module – submit

  18. StudentWork module – confirm

  19. StudentWork module – success

  20. StudentWork module – search InfoBase StudentWork

  21. Studentwork evaluation – results “What was the advantage for you of looking at the work at others?” • inspiration / ideas • comparison of speed or level • learned something • insight related to the relativity of metadata • “you want to know why that person chose just those claims” • “you see what others think about these keywords” • “everyone describes his/her detail very differently” • “my detail had another context”

  22. Other applications • We developed a number of applications using the InfoBase system • Support communication • Knowledge management

  23. Design Analysis Network

  24. MediatedDiscourse

  25. Blob Inventory Project
