Figure Skating • Figure Skating is a form of artistic dance on ice. Skaters use skates which have a blade on the bottom. The blade has 2 edges, an inside edge and a outside edge. The figure skater skates on one edge at a time, not both. • The blade also has teeth at the toe called a toe pick, used for stopping and turning.
Facts about Figure Skating • Figure skating is broken down into singles or pairs. There is women’s singles, men’s singles and pairs. • Figure skating events for singles is broken down into 2 events: short program and free skating program or long program. • The short program has eight required elements, such as jump combinations and spins. • During the free skate the skater preforms original techniques to music of their choice.
Facts about Figure Skating • Figure skating was the first winter sport to be included in the Olympic games, it debut in Chamonix in 1924. • Figure skating is judged by: • How the skater presents him or herself • How their program relates to the music • How the skater utilizes speed and the ice surface • If the program meets the required elements
Kaetlyn Osmond • Kaetlyn Osmond was born in Marystown, Newfoundland on December 5, 1995. • She currently lives and trains in Edmonton Alberta. • Kaetlyn has been skating since she was 2 years old. • Kaetlyn is a 2 time Canadian figure skating champion, she just recently achieved the second highest score in the history of the event • Kaetlyn says “It is a dream come true to be going to Sochi to skate for Olympic gold”.
