Question of the day What is a good way to give someone directions? How would tell someone exactly where something is?
Coordinate plane • Consists of two axis • X-axis goes horizontal (left to right) • Y-axis goes vertical (up and down) • Origin is the intersection of the two axis
quadrants • The coordinate plane is divided into four quadrants
Order pair • Is a pair numbers that allow you to locate a point on a coordinate plane • Two numbers that form the ordered pair called coordinate
How to use the order pair • (4,6) • The 4 is the X coordinate. It tells you how many units right or left from 0. • The 6 is the Y coordinate. It tell you how many units up or down from 0.
origin • The origin is the middle • It is (0,0)
You try • Find the coordinate and quadrant of point P and point Q.
directions • Put away notes • Get out graph paper, if you have any
summary • In what quadrant would the point (-4,-5) be? • Why are the both negative
Question of the day • Plug in the value of a variable into an equation and get an answer. If you were to increase the value of that variable, would the answer always increase?
Function • Input • Output
function • A rule to produce exactly one output for every one input value. • Huh? It is similar to an equation that equals Y, that includes X
example • Y=2X+9 • Y=X • Y=X - 5
Input value • The value substituted into the function. • Y=4X+6 • If X=3 then 3 is the input value • It is also called the domain
Output value • The value that results from the substitution • Y=6X • If X=3 then • Y=6(3), so Y = 18 • 18 is the output value
Function table • We use function table to find input and output value
summary • You are given a function. Then you are given either the input or output value. Could you find the input or output not given to you? • How?
