  1. APAI/INDOTLongitudinal Joint Technical Sub-Committee APAI Winter ConferenceDecember 14, 2010 M. Dudley Bonte

  2. History • Need expressed at APAI Technical Meeting • 7-28-2009 – Draft Density Specification proposal to INDOT for Consideration • Need acknowledged by INDOT, but tabled due to more pressing issues (stimulus, RAP, etc.) • 3/08/2010 – Discussion restarted, Task Committee formed

  3. Task Committee • Mike Prather, INDOT • Matt Beeson, INDOT • Jeff James, INDOT • Heather Woods, INDOT • Tom Duncan, FHWA • Brian Crume, APAI • Dudley Bonte, APAI

  4. Direction of Committee • Reviewed NCAT & JTRP reports sent out • Discussed many options for improving Joints • Joint Mastic (best long term performer in studies) • Notch Wedge Joints • Compaction methodology (Roller Techniques) • Density along Joint • Fog seals • Others

  5. Possible Options • Joint Mastic Material • Good LT performance in studies • Plausible short term step • Difficult to measure density • Supply/ without proprietary product • Experimental project in LaPorte District

  6. Possible Options • Density Specification • How to incorporate PWL • More destructive testing (cores on joint) • How to accept and pay? Gmm? Administration?

  7. Possible Options • Fog seal • Reduce permeability • Difficult to measure • Needs further study

  8. Possible Options • COMBINATION OF SOLUTIONS

  9. Special Provision

  10. Special Provision (Approved by Standard Committee) • Joint Adhesive Materials • Applied to intermediate and surface joints • Pay Unit- LFt. • Informational Cores (data gathering) • Acceptance cores- > 12” from Joint • Information Cores- 6” from Joint

  11. Study Plan • Target 6 jobs • Tonnages >15000 ton for Intermediate & > 9000 ton for Surface • Gather & Review data collected • Continue studies of other methods & technologies (e.g. fog seals) • Note: having some difficulty targeting study plan jobs

  12. Discussion / Q & A
