  1. CERN Trip Report: April 4-8, 2011 LAFS Work Elliott McCrory April 20, 2011

  2. Outline • People • Jones and Lars (BI) • Sigerud & Deghaye (CO/AP) • Hatziangeli • Lamont • And, of course, Lahey. • Projects • Existing work • Potential Future Work • Personnel LAFS

  3. USD/CHF 100 CHF = $111.17 (!) LAFS

  4. Summary of Discussions • Beam Instrumentation Folks • Rhodri Jones & Lars Jensen • Satisfied with Schottky work • Proposed a new Daemon/GUI project for bunch-by-bunch measurement and display • Details coming… • BE/CO/Applications Folks • Katarina and Stephane • They strongly acknowledge the good work that the LAFS team has provided and can provide • RBAC • Daemon Infrastructure • Operations Applications • Propose a new project to help with InCA (Injector Controls Architecture) and LSA database configurations. • Details coming… LAFS

  5. Department Heads • Eugenia (BE/CO) • Will initiate the creation of a new M.O.U. for our bosses (Paul Collier and Roger Dixon) • Mike (BE/OP) • Described the week’s work, and the status of LAFS • They said • Words of encouragement • Would like to see more contributions LAFS

  6. Status of Existing Work Supertable Wire Scanner App Schottky Suite BSRT (Synchrotron Light) App

  7. Supertable • Taken over by BE/CO (Mario Pereira) • Prototype is working • http://cern.ch/test-supertable • Not online: Need work from DM LAFS

  8. Wire Scanner • Bunch-by-bunch capabilities fully integrated • Listened to lots of criticism/suggestions for improvement. New LAFS

  9. New Feature: Mountain Range LAFS

  10. Schottky Suite • Daemon and GUI • Only bunch-by-bunch device active! • Well, there’s the Fast BCT, too. • BSRT is almost there. • Used extensively • Favier, Pieloni, Mounet • Just implemented: • Play List • Save/Restore LAFS

  11. Schottky Emittances LAFS

  12. LAFS

  13. Slot Selection GUI LAFS

  14. Schottky Play List LAFS

  15. Schottky Save/Restore LAFS

  16. Synchrotron Light • Unclear future for LAFS • They proposed that we write a Daemon • Started in early February • Was not accepted (late February) • Talk of having a new GUI created • Not good • Terri and I are paying attention! LAFS

  17. Proposals BI: Bunch data display CO/AP: LSA Config GUIs

  18. Project Proposal: BI Bunch GUI • A new BI GUI • Imagined by Rhodri, Lars and Jean-Jacques Gras • Basics: • Gather bunch-by-bunch info from all BI devices that do bunch-by-bunch • Schottky (Daemon) • Fast BCT • BSRT (soon) • Concentrated in one place • a Daemon • Republish in coherent manner • Create a GUI • Configure the Daemon • Allow easy access to all bunch-by-bunch data • Proposal letter (pre-requirements) coming • Audience: LAFS team, BI group, P. Collier and R. Dixon. LAFS

  19. Proposal: LSA DB Config GUIs • Katarina and Stephane • Need a simpler way to configure the LSA device database • LSA Database being pushed into injector • Have existing tools, but must be replaced • Configure front ends directly, through a non-standard interface • But easy for PS-Complex operators to use • LHC/SPS Situation? • Only Extreme experts can configure • Requires raw SQL (through Benthic) LAFS

  20. LSA DB Config GUIs, cont’d • A limited number of GUIs are required • Less than ten? • But we would develop the pattern for making more • Stephane will write a proposal letter • Target: LAFS team, E. Hatziangeli, M. Lamont, P. Collier and R. Dixon. • Proposed team: • Deghaye would be the liaison • Katarina and Mike would designate a “customer” • LAFS team will decide on a work group LAFS

  21. Proposals: Next steps? • Awaiting these documents • Jones (Bunch data concentrator and GUI) • Stephane (LSA Configuration GUIs) • Eugenia (M.O.U. proposal) • Analyze LAFS work force • Now: 1.x FTE (Jerry and me), plus Terri. • Can we increase that number? • Are *YOU* interested in these new projects??? LAFS

  22. Personnel • Liaison • Terri returns to SLAC soon • Officially: May 31 • Would like to extend • We have requested for Suzanne to be at CERN starting in October • Support from Prebys and Dixon • Official approval is pending • Elliott and Jerry C.: ~full time • The End LAFS
