The mission of the Howard County Gifted and Talented Education Program is to recognize and develop talent in advanced-level students.
G/T Mathematics • Curriculum is enriched & accelerated by as much as two years • Focus is on problem solving and application of mathematical skills • Daily mathematics instruction by the G/T Resource Teacher (1 hour 15 minutes/day) • Grade 5 - 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. • Grade 4 - 11:00 – 12:15
G/T Mathematics • Testing • 3rd and 5th Grade CogAT Scores • New Students - SCAT Ability Testing - 6th grade norms • Placement Review Procedures - multiple criteria examined • Nomination • by parent, teacher, or student • based upon achievement test scores or student performance
G/T Mathematics • Extension of the Common Core curriculum to meet the needs of students for when they enter Algebra 1 in 7th grade • No spiraling curriculum from year to year; it is a mastery curriculum. Therefore, there is increased depth and complexity • Emphasis on advanced level problem solving • Homework will involve both practice of concepts and problem solving • Students are assessed using math tests, performance tasks, formative assessments, and class participation
G/T Mathematics • 4th Grade Domains: • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Numbers and Operations in Base 10 • Numbers and Operations – Fractions • Geometry • Measurement • 5th Grade Domains: • Number Systems • Ratios and Proportional Relationships • Expressions and Equations • Geometry • Statistics and Probability
• Daily Homework may be assigned Monday - Thursday nights Homework is often self-checking Homework should generally take around 30 minutes, which may include time spent on long range assignments and/or reviewing. Practice Olympiads may be assigned on Mondays and due the following week. Students are encouraged to work on long-range assignments with their families. See Sample Math Olympiad hand-out Long range projects related to units of study may also be assigned and require at-home work. G/T Mathematics Long Range Homework

G/T Mathematics Mathematical Olympiads ·Contests are taken at school November through March • All HCPSS Elementary Schools participate. ·Each contest consists of five non-routine problems. ·Every problem requires careful mathematical thinking and has a time limit. ·Each student, working alone, scores 1 point for each correct answer. Thus, a student may score up to 25 points per year. ·Calculators are not permitted.
