Following Your Heart Have you ever just known that something was right? Do you believe that YOU can make a difference?
H.I.S. Life Ministry The journey of our non-profit started with that first trip in April 2005. Our first thought upon setting foot on African soil: “What is that smell?”
“The Place Needs a Shower” • Poverty • Malnourishment • Sickness • Death We knew we were there for a reason. We realized it was the smell of
Work to Do in Africa • Beating Disease • Building Shelter • Bringing Water We came back home knowing we needed to help accomplish:
Kindred Spirits – A Common Goal Strong connection, common interests and shared vision lead to partnership • Atoosa Abascal • Louis “Tito” Abascal • Melodie Cochran “Are you willing to love my people?”
H.I.S. Life Accomplishments • Explored to see what was needed • Visited with NACC – Namwera AIDS Coordinating Committee • 80% of people dying is due to lack of medicine • Mangochi , nearest town to take sick for treatment, was 3 hours away • Only had 1 motorcycle for transport • Took steps to purchase a van • 8 to 12 people per trip • People don’t have to die!
A Van Changes Lives “On behalf of NACC and indeed on my own behalf, I would like to congratulate you and your team for improving the access of health care for the HIV/AIDS patients, Orphans and other vulnerable children, the aged, pregnant mothers and improvement of our service delivery. “
What It Means to Have a Van • Van transports AIDS patients 8 trips of 16 people/week • One for HIV+ children and rest for poor HIV+ adults • # of patients receiving ARVs has doubled • Student bitten by green mamba (poisonous snake) rushed to hospital for treatment; could have died without transport • Poor mothers delivering at home instead of health centres due to lack of transport are now delivering at hospital T-shirt: zazzle.com
Things We’ve Seen in Africa • Houses & buildings unfinished • Nomads • Things not built well – every rainy season they have to begin again • Buildings had been abandoned • General lack of covenant – promises broken are the norm
H.I.S. Life’s Goal –Malawi 2010 Trip • Meet with government to discuss Glory Campus and H.I.S. Life’s registration in Malawi • Secure land
