Structuralist Structuralist theories is the understanding of human societies, and particularly their culture Which cannot be limited to the study of observable events but should also explain for those unspoken idea and process related to the daily life.
In architecture The term structure usually refers to the material and static properties of human-made buildings. BUT In structuralism The term refers to a forward-thinking of movement in architectural theory and practice which has developed in reaction to functionalist understandings.
The theoretical and methodological of structuralist explain the study of vernacular architecture in three terms: • Global structuralism • Analytical structuralism • Cognitive structuralism
Global structuralism In the first understanding of structure and structuralism the term structure Refers to a system of evident Which evident has relation with variable. furthermore variables are studied in order to indentify the mutual relations.
Global structuralism Glassie developed a typology of 17 basic house type founded on the combination of size, shape, relative position rooms, as well as the location of doors, windows and chimneys. He states that the builder’s consciously or unconsciously used geometrical and compositional rules which he calls the architectural skill.
Moreover he applies understanding of cognitive structuralism, which maintains human mind has begun capacity to order material culture. Although the architectural skill has strong experiential support, Glassie provides no understanding of the meaning for it. Consequently he is unable to show that the rules of the architectural skill are signs of other products and process of human culture in Virginia.
Analytical structuralism The second understanding of structure and structuralism represent a more characteristic of theoretical concept. Furthermore Analytical structuralism studies in the field of Human cognition structuralist linguistics and Marxism.
There is an example in this approach which levi-struassanalyse of the concentric layout of the villages in the Trobriand islands.
An Omarakan village is arranged in two concentric rings. A central public space is surrounded by storehouses which are sacred. A circular street is located around these storehouses and the dwellings of married couples are constructed around the outer edge.
In his structural analysis, he mentioned that, although the spatial organization of a village can be described according to the orientation, position of objects, activities and people, these clear cut interdependent variables alone cannot account for the social meaning of design and use of spaces in the village.
Cognitive structuralism Cognitive structuralism is the theory and method of structural linguistic which directly or indirectly it is related to the analysis of components of human culture. For instance it is look like a language, which can be understood as a system of signs.
Consequently in any study of built environment in general and in studies of vernacular architecture in particular, it is important to consider the interrelation between hidden(implicit) and clear(explicit) parameter. This kind of approach allows analysis for the meaning of functional aspect and to the design, construction and use of vernacular buildings.
