  2. What is a coil gun? • A projectile accelerator • Electromagnet coils form a linear motor • There may be a series of coils, switched on an off in sequence

  3. Coil Gun v. Rail gun • There is a distinction, duh • Unlike coil guns, rail guns pass current through the projectile by way of sliding contacts

  4. Construction • Solenoid • Ferromagnetic object (projectile) • A large current • Current creates a magnetic field, which pulls the projectile to the center of the coil • Single stage • Multi Stage
