  6. 2. Membership Info • Turn your Membership Form into a NSSLHA officer,Dr. Sotto’s mailbox in French East, or the NSSLHA mailbox in the Steger Life Center by September 23rd! • Order a tote bag for $30 CSD, SLP, or AuD Red, green, or pink • Drawstring bags for the CSDudes!

  8. 3. NSSLHA Mentoring Another way to be more involved with NSSLHA! Juniors and seniors will serve as a mentor for freshman CSD students! Goals: • Become more involved and develop leadership skills • Share your experiences • Network and get to know students in other grade levels It is up to the mentor and mentee what you do with it! You could grab lunch together, meet at NSSLHA meetings, have study sessions, etc.

Community Service Events Little Sisters of the Poor Bingo Night Wednesday, September18th & November 6th approx. 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Location: 476 Riddle Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45220 (3 min. drive) Number of Volunteers: 10 – 15 (full) What to Expect: Volunteers will help set up bingo, and play bingo with the nursing home residents and hand out prizes! This is all about making it a fun night for the residents!

Community Service Events Craft Lunch & Learn at Children’s Monday, September 23rd 9:00am - 1:00pm and 12:00pm - 4:00pm Location:Main Speech-Language Pathology Department 3430 Burnet Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio 45229 Number of Volunteers: unlimited! What to Expect: Volunteers will help make crafts to be used by SLPs at Children’s during their therapy sessions. Lunch will also be provided for both time sections.

  13. 4. Community Service Events Into the Streets Saturday, September 28th 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Location: William Howard Taft National Historic Site. Meet at McMicken Commons and arrive a little before 8:30. Number of Volunteers: I still need 5 people! But I need all registration forms TOMORROW! How to sign up: Go to this link and register as a general volunteer:http://www.uc.edu/cce/student/ITS.htmland then fill out the registration form that was emailed to you. What to Expect: Volunteers meet at McMicken Commons then break off into groups to work on housing and beautification projects for nonprofit organizations in the Cincinnati community. We will all be together working at William Howard Taft National Historic Site cleaning up the area.

  14. 4. Community Service Events Dance With My Daddy Friday, October 4th 5:00pm - ? Location: P.O. Box 31063 Cincinnati, Ohio 45231 Number of Volunteers: 15 people What to Expect: This is a dance for children with disabilities and their fathers. Volunteers will be helping to greet and serve food and beverages to all of the children and fathers! This is a new event that we are participating in but I’ve heard it is an awesome program put on Fathers Taking A Role (FTAR).

Community Service Events Ronald McDonald House Thursday, October 17th & November 14th approx. 5:00 – 8:00 p.m Location: 350 Erkenbrecher Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45229 (5 min. drive) Number of Volunteers: 10 What to Expect: Volunteers will be preparing dinner for those living in the Ronald McDonald House. Usually meals are prepared for about 70 guests.

Community Service Events Freestore Foodbank Thanksgiving Meals (Tentative) November near Thanksgiving Location: 112 East Liberty Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202 (7 min. drive) Number of Volunteers: 15 each day What to Expect: Volunteers will be distributing Thanksgiving meal packages to about 8,000 families in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. Volunteers will be asked to manage customer lines, assist with intake of the customers, handing out packages and assisting with carrying packages. Volunteers may be inside or out – please wear weather appropriate clothing that is comfortable!

  19. 5. Fundraising Working Concessions • Football & basketball games • Easy way to make money for NSSLHA • Money is donated to great organizations • $35 dollars per person or 10% of sales! • Send out emails as dates come closer • Google Doc. sign-ups • Let me know if you’d like to work.

  20. 5. Fundraising Pizza / Bake Sales • 2x this year (1 per semester) • Working on date for Fall semester • Need volunteers! • Work actual bake sale (1 point/hour) • Bring in baked goods (.5 point for donation)

When?: 2013 ASHA Convention in Chicago Theme: “The Magic of Teamwork: Science and Service Delivery.” • Contest includes: • T-shirt Design/Video inspired by the 2013 theme • Poster displaying the theme,our chapter’s activities, community involvement, fundraising, awards, and individual member’s awards IDEAS??

Charge up Your Chapter • Local chapters that are successful at engaging their members to participate in activities that have a lasting impression on the future of the association. • The chapter with the most posts (or replies) to the NSSLHA group on the ASHA Community by October 31 • The chapter with the most students registered for the 2013 ASHA Convention • The chapter with the most student memberships in ASHA’s Special Interest Groups by October 31

Charge up Your Chapter • The chapter with the most male students (as determined by data submitted to the Higher Education System [HES]) • The chapter with the most submissions to ASHA and NSSLHA awards, grants, scholarships, and competitions; • The chapter with the most creative collaboration between audiology students and speechpathology students; and • The chapter that has donated the most money to the ASHFoundation this year.

  37. 9. Rewards-Only Points System To be a member: • Turn in membership form • Attend a meeting or event (you just activated by being here!)

Rewards-Only Points System 1 hour of participation = 1 point For example: A meeting = 1 hour = 1 point Working concessions = 6 hours = 6 points Habitat for Humanity 4 hours = 4 points Working on newsletter = 2 hours = 2 points Fall Ball = 3 hours = 3 points SAA Red's Game = 3 hours = 3 points and so on.

  39. 9. Rewards-Only Points System ONE EXCEPTION to hour rule: Donation of a food item to meeting or bake sale = .5 point Secretary Molly Murrison is keeping track: email her with questions about your total If attendance was taken, we have recorded your points.

Top 10 point-earners at the end of the semester (approx 10% of total membership) = Recognized in the Fall newsletter, January meeting, and a list will be sent to Dr. Sotto and the faculty Top 10 point-earners at the end of the year (cumulative) = All of that, AND get an award at the annual CSD Banquet!

Important Dates Virtual Advocacy Day Recognizing that the decisions made in Congress today will leave a lasting impact for years to come, NSSLHA and ASHA have joined together to sponsor a Virtual Advocacy Day on Wednesday, October 2, 2013. All you have to do is log on to ASHA’s Take Action site, personalize a letter, and send to Congress! It only takes a few minutes of your time! More detailed information will come out closer to the date!

Announcements Multicultural Concerns in Communication Sciences and Disorders ( MC2) President: Julia Fallon • student organization that provides a forum for students to discuss multicultural issues that Speech-Language Pathologists see throughout their careers. • have the opportunity to hear a variety of guest speakers, get connected with unique community service opportunities, and learn more about important issues in the realm of Speech and Language.

  50. National NSSLHA Experience This past August we went to the ASHA Office for NSSLHA Training. We learned that Region 4 (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan,and Ontario) is struggling compared to other Regions. Tracking: Look at amount of applications towards awards & grants, participation in conventions and advocacy day
