Colossians. 3:14 - "love" agapē - unconditional love; impersonal love. “above all” – same as in Ephesians 6:16 – “in addition to all these things” “Bond” – sundesmos - that which binds together; of ligaments by which the members of the human body are united together (cf. 2:19). “Perfection” – completeness; maturity. Cf. I Corinthians 13:1-8

  3. I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Love" agapē - unconditional love; impersonal love. Agapē – Initiated Received Response Phileō – Initiated (Soul Rapport) Received Response Eros – Initiated (For marriage only – between 1 man & 1 woman only) Received Response

  4. I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Suffers long” – present active indicative of makrothumeō – (cf. Colossians 3:12) that quality of self-restraint in the face of provocation which does not hastily retaliate or promptly punish; it is the opposite of anger & is associated with mercy; to be of a long spirit; to not lose heart; to persevere patiently & bravely; self-restraint regardless of circumstances; patience under pressure; relaxed mental attitude under pressure. Usually related to people testing.

  5. I Corinthians 13:1-8 Word study of makrothumeō – Related to Faith-Rest. Heb. 6:12 & 15. Related to objectivity & justice (taking time to hear the facts – i.e., both sides of the story!). Acts 26:3 (vs. 1…). Related to forgiveness. Matt. 18:26, 29 (vs. 21-35). Related to persistent prayer. Lk. 18:7 (cf. II Cor. 1:3, 4). It is God’s attitude toward unbelievers & reversionistic (backsliding) believers. Gal. 5:22; Eph. 4:2 (vs. 1-6). It is a part of each believer’s ministry. II Cor. 6:6 (vs. 1-10). It is commanded as a part of the Christian way of life. Col. 3:12 (vs. 5-17); I Thess. 5:14 (vs. 14 & 15). It is to be done joyfully!! Col. 1:11 (vs. 9-12). Longsuffering & the Pastor/Teacher. II Tim. 4:2 (vs. 1-5). Longsuffering & times of apostasy. II Tim. 3:10 (vs. 1-12); Jms. 5:7, 8, 10 (vs. 1-11). Longsuffering & the angelic conflict. I Pet. 3:20 (vs. 18-22). Longsuffering is an integral part of the Love Complex. I Cor. 13:4.

  6. I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Kind” – present middle indicative of chresteuomai – to be gentle, kind; a gracious attitude toward others; giving others the benefit of the doubt (cf. Eph. 4:32; Gal. 5:22).
