Montana 1948Larry Watson Character Study “A beautiful novel about the meaning of place and evolution of courage…a wonderful book.” – Louise Erdrich (author)
Your task: • In a group of three, you will draw out a central character in the text Montana 1948. It is your job to become the ‘expert’ on this character. Using some guiding questions, you will prepare a study resource for the class based on your particular character. You must present it as a powerpoint slideshow and have the following: • Key questions to ask about character answered • Class activity • At least THREE quotations from text to describe your character • At least SIX adjectives to describe your character • Illustration of what YOU THINK your character would look like • Paragraph that sums up WHO your character is and WHY they’re important
You will have TWO periods of class time to put this together… Make sure that you include EVERYONE in your group. You won’t have enough time to go through step-by-step as a whole group, you may need to delegate roles; e.g. – someone to create powerpoint, someone to find quotes, someone to illustrate, answer quick questions etc.
Key questions to ask about character: • What is the character’s appearance? • What strengths and weaknesses does the character have? • What does the character think and/or say about themselves? • How does the character act and react? • Is the character associated with particular settings or personal possessions? • What is the character’s background? • What beliefs and values does the character have? • How would you describe the character’s personality? • What do other characters think and/or say about the character in question?
Presenting your character… • Once you have prepared your character lesson, you will present it to the class. • They will undertake your class activity in order to get to understand the character better • They will write down THREE quotes for the character and SIX adjectives • Your powerpoint will be uploaded onto a Year 12 wikipage for you to use as a study resource
