Uses of the Imperfect • Past actions that are continuing or in progress Hablaban mientras caminaban. They were talking while they were walking. Hacía su tarea a esa hora. He was doing his homework at that hour. • Sometimes, a continuing action is interrupted by another action. The continuing action is in the imperfect and the interrupting action is in the preterite. Abuelita llamó mientras comíamos. Grandma called while we were eating. Jugaba muy bien cuando chocó con un defensor. He was playing very well when he ran into a guard.
Uses of the preterite • Past actions that are viewed as a completed whole. • Words which specify a limited time period are frequently associated with the preterite. Typical words are ayer, el lunes, el fin de semana pasado, un día, una vez. Ayer cenamos tamprano. Yesterday we ate supper early. Leí la lección antes de clase. I read the lesson before class.
Uses of preterite • focus attention on the beginning or end of a past action Beginning: Comimos a las 6:00. We ate at 6:00. De reprente brilló el sol. Suddenly the sun began to shine. Irma habló a los diez meses. Irma started to talk at ten months. End: Regresó muy tarde. He returned very late. La clase terminó a la una. Class ended at one. Pasó la tormenta. The storm ended.
Stem-Changing IR verbs in the preterite. E I / O U • There are NO –ar or –er verbs with a stem change in the preterite. • Stem-Changing –IR verbs change vowels in the preterite. BUT, the change only occurs in the 3rd person singular (ella, él, usted) and 3rd person plural (ellas, ellos, ustedes.)
