  1. Earth’s Atmosphere • The Earth’s atmosphere has 5 layers. • We live in the troposphere layer which is the layer closest to the Earth. • The troposphere is also the layer where all weather occurs. • The ozone at the top of the stratosphere layer protects us from harmful energy coming from the Sun like UV radiation. • UV radiation helps our bodies make vitamin D but it also causes sunburn, skin damage, cataracts, and skin cancer. • You cannot see or smell UV radiation.

  2. Misconceptions • Many people think the earth’s atmosphere is much larger than the earth which is wrong!! • This happens because the drawings that show the layers of the atmosphere are drawn to include so much information about each layer they are NOT TO SCALE ! • TRUTH: The Earth is actually much larger than the height of the layers of the atmosphere! • The next slide is an actual picture taken by the Hubble space telescope showing the TRUE scale proportions.

  3. Layers of Earth’s atmosphere taken by the Hubble Space Telescope

  4. Ozone Layer We are lucky to have this layer protecting us here on Earth.

  5. HIGH ALTITUDE Notice that at about 100km there is a dramatic spike in heat in our atmosphere. The Ozone protects us from too much of this heat energy and dangerous UV radiation from the Sun. Ozone LOW ALTITUDE COLD HOT

  6. Some of the energy from the sun enters our atmosphere and keeps the earth warm. • Some of that warmth escapes back out into space. • Some of the energy from the sun bounces off our atmosphere, never reaching the earth.

  7. We know the sun’s energy sends us heat and light, but did you know it also sends us invisible radio waves, microwaves, infrared rays, ultraviolet radiation, x-rays and gamma rays at the same time! • About 10 minutes of Sun a day allows ultraviolet (UV) radiation to help our bodies make vitamin D. • BUT too much exposure to UVA, UVB and UVC radiation will cause skin cell damage, sunburn, winkles, cateractsand skin cancer. • Too much exposure to the other rays will also hurt our body’s cells but the Ozone Layer protects us from them.

  8. People pollute our atmosphere. • Air that is not moving and too much pollution cause OZONE WARNINGS. • This ozone is in the troposphere and is very different from the ozone layer above the stratosphere.

  9. Clouds also have effects on the Earth’s radiation! • Clouds reflect solar radiation back out into space BUT • Even though it is cloudy UV radiation still gets though to you to cause sunburn, damage to skin cells, cateracts and eventually skin cancer!

  10. Review • The Earth’s atmosphere has 5 layers. • We live in the troposphere, the closest layer to the Earth. • The troposphere is where all weather takes place. • The Sun is always sending it’s energy to Earth. • The ozone in our atmosphere protects us from harmful energy coming from the sun. • 10 minutes of exposure a day to UV radiation helps our body make vitamin D. • Too much exposure to UV radiation can damage skin cells causing sunburn, wrinkles, cataracts and skin cancer.
