Symbolism A picture is worth 1,000 words
Symbolism • Is around us every day • Is a NON-LINGUISTIC (NOT A WORD) representation of a thing, idea or attitude. • As you continue your years in school, your literature classes will often begin focusing around symbolism (Trust me, I saw some examples of high school tests on Tuesday!). • You relied on a symbol to get safely to school this morning . . . Don’t believe me?
Chat about it • Find a partner. • Brainstorm a list of all of the symbols that are a part of your daily life. Include visual and auditory symbols in your list.
Going beyond the obvious • Symbolism is a great time to try your hand at some “scuba-diving” thinking, or HOTS. • While some symbols are easy to interpret, others may take a little more thought. • Consider the following.
Try it . . . Find images to symbolize each of the following ideasthat are listed on the next slide. -Begin by finding an “water-skiing” , or very surface level/obvious, symbol for each of the ideas. -Then, try to find a “scuba-diving”, or HOTS, symbol for the same idea. -Write a one sentence explanation under the images. -Use any app you think appropriate for the task. Suggestion: Keynote might be easiest!
Can you find symbols for? • Peace • Hate • Friendship • Music • Hunger • Sadness
