What is LocalCheck? Helping people to recognise and value their local heritage so they can sustain the distinctive resources of the locality to pass on to future generations Exploring all those things we can choose to do which sustain the locality – local heritage, local produce, local traders, local transport, local celebrations as well as those things that reach us from around the world
How to sustain the local Sustaining the locality involves: Boosting the local economy esp. valuing local distinctive products, people and places Boosting the local community esp. including young people in local decision-making Boosting the local environment as the basis of all esp. changing consumer lifestyle to use resources efficiently and protect the environment And valuing and sustaining the global
What is LocalCheck? The LocalCheck approach is a way of exploring, valuing, promoting and sustaining the local. A Pledge from a local group or managers of a community building to help people explore, value, promote and sustain the local. An Example of how they do it in terms of Welcoming, Building, Enriching, Interpreting, Travelling, Feeding, Trading and Celebrating. A Champion to lead the promotion and set an example in terms of local and global citizenship.

You and your locality – some group activities • Draw a memory map of your locality • Mark on your map (of Rutland) the quietest, prettiest, noisiest, grottiest places • Take photographs of local features to build a collage map • Use articles or adverts in the local paper to build a collage map. Use the 8 themes • Find the exact position where old photographs were taken and take photos to spot the changes. Match Then and Now pictures • Photograph or draw an A to Z of As to Zs in the locality • Interview and tape record the memories of older local people and the hopes of younger local people
