HISTORY and SIGNIFICANCE • The Kate Greenaway Medal is an award given in England for distinguished illustration in a children’s book • Named for Kate Greenaway • Popular artist and children’s book author/illustrator in England, late 1800s • “Competed” with Randolph Caldecott • Created a clothing style for children through art

HISTORY and SIGNIFICANCE • Established in 1955 • First awarded in 1957 • Awarded annually (in England) • Awarded to book published during previous year • Books are nominated and chosen by library professionals! • Winners receive: • A golden medal • £ 500 worth of books to donate to a library • £ 5,000 Colin Mears Award (cash) • Awarded since 2000 • British accountant and children’s book collector

AWARD ORGANIZATION • Awarded by: Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) • The ALA equivalent in England • CILIP members (library professionals) nominate books! • Judges panel is made up of 12 children’s librarians • Members of Youth Libraries Group (YLG) – division of CILIP

SELECTION CRITERIA • Original publication: • For children/young people • In United Kingdom or co-published in UK within 3 months of publication elsewhere • In English or Bilingual with English as one language • Outstanding artistic quality • “Stimulating and satisfying visual experience which leaves a lasting impression” (CILIP, Criteria, Para. 7) • Consider interaction between text and illustrations • All types of illustrated children’s books are eligible • Previous Kate Greenaway winners are eligible Click the trees to connect to the CILIP Living Archive of Greenaway Winners
